It all started in 1935, when builder and entrepreneur Scott King opened King’s Auto Court Motel in San Diego—just in time for the World’s Fair. The fair’s excitement drew crowds from across the country, filling every room for the entire year. Inspired by this success, Scott saw an opportunity: travelers needed a comfortable, convenient place to stay near their next great destination. Drawing on his expertise as a contractor, he expanded rapidly, opening 24 motels across Southern California in just five years. By 1940, the first official Travelodge debuted, and in 1954, the brand introduced its beloved Ambassador of Adventure: Sleepy Bear—a symbol of restful stays before big adventures. Today, Travelodge continues to fuel exploration. We partner with the National Parks Conservation Association, the voice of America’s national parks, and showcase vibrant See America Project artwork in our lobbies. Whether you’re chasing sunsets on the coast, hiking mountain trails, or exploring hidden gems, you’ll find a Travelodge nearby—your perfect basecamp for adventure.
